Based on this background, I wish to express how very much I thoroughly enjoyed reading Erec and Enide. This is the old, and obsolete, W. The translation is good and keeps the rhyme, though at times I wonder how true it is to the original. The apparent lack of agency in women characters is expected, but ultimately deceiving. Erec and Enide marry in the first third of the story though, and the rest is the navigation of masculinity and femininity and knowledge of partner in this married space. De Troyes is little known unless one is a French medieval student.

I always feel as if Chreien missing some substantial literary devices, reading in translation. The stories go on into their married life, already, something unusual. I am not a scholar. Even as stories like those in A Game of Thrones satirise the knightly outlook, Erec and Enide represents transparent ideals of love, married life, the behaviours and duties of husband and wife and growing up.
